Our garage door experts have a lot of useful tips to offer you. If you want to learn how you can extend the longevity of your overhead door system, or how to prevent all sorts of problems from occurring, then take a look at the list below.
Make yourself a garage door maintenance checklist
It's not always easy to remember all the different things we need to do on a regular basis and that includes garage door maintenance. The easiest way to remember everything is to make yourself an annual checklist of what needs to be done and set yourself timely reminders. A well maintained garage door system will last much longer than a neglected one.
Unplug your garage door opener when you go on vacation
If you're about to go on vacation or leave your home for any extended period of time, it is a good idea to unplug your garage door opener after you get your car out. This will prevent burglars from exploiting it in order to get inside your home. A lot of modern openers have a "vacation mode" or a "digital lock" feature that will serve you just as well.
Make sure that you get an opener with the right type of motor for your needs
DC and AC motors vary quite a lot in how they work and how much noise they produce. A DC motor will probably be more suited for most homes, as it doesn't struggle with the stop/go action that openers require. They are also much more silent. AC motors are better suited for long and continues operation, rather than one that relies on short bursts of action. They are also bulkier, and a lot louder, which makes a huge difference if you have an attached garage.
